I don't listen to much mainstream rap music, but I do check in from time to time to see what's trending. During one such check in, I noticed that a LOT of rappers were rapping about women providing sexual services in exchange for designer handbags. Even though I support sex workers and their craft, I had to give the "purses for pussy" trope the side eye. I got the impression that it was less about empowering sex workers and more about portraying women as hypersexual opportunists.
The line "I ain't hoeing for no handbag" came to me, and I started writing from there. And I love the irony of using the beat from "Gorilla Pimp" to rap about a woman making her own way without a pimp or a John footing the bill.
